School introduction

Bournemouth School is a grammar school for boys in the Charminster area of Bournemouth, Dorset. The school has a coeducational sixth form, and a total of 1400 pupils aged 11 to 18. The school was founded in 1901, moving to its present site in 1939.

Bournemouth School is an academy, meaning it has more control over its curriculum than most schools. The school has long specialised in languages, and runs a foreign exchange programme. The Language department offers trips to France, Spain and Germany, and there is also an annual ski trip.

Facilities at the school’s sports centre include a sports hall and a gym. There are also four tennis courts and large playing fields. The school has a wide range of sports teams and clubs. On the music front, Bournemouth School is served by a team of visiting music teachers teaching a range of instruments. The school is home to several choirs and a number of bands and other ensembles. The school has a scout troop and a Combined Cadet Force.

School performance

At GCSE in 2019, 97% of maths and English grades were 5 or above. 59% of grades were 9-7.

Bournemouth School has a Progress 8 score of 0.46, meaning that pupils, on average, gain almost half a grade on their performance at the KS2 SATs by the time they sit their GCSEs.

At A-level the average grade in 2019 was B+, while the national average was C+.

Bournemouth School has an Outstanding Ofsted rating.

Admissions information

Only boys can enter Bournemouth School at Year 7, and in 2022 the school intends to admit 180 pupils. Applicants to Bournemouth School must sit and pass an 11+ examination in order to win a place. Parents must register their child for the test in the summer of the year before admission through a form that will become available on the school website. Most years, the exam takes place in September, and it is held at the school.

Bournemouth School is part of a consortium of four grammar schools in the Bournemouth area. All these schools use the same exam, and have the same pass mark. In October after the exam parents will be told whether their child passed the exam. At this point, they may also choose which school(s) in the Bournemouth area they want to apply to, regardless of which school they sat the exam at.

Parents then apply to the school by naming Bournemouth School as one of the choices on their Common Application Form, and submit the form to their Local Authority.

Usually, more applicants pass the 11+ exam than there are places at the school.  Priority is given to boys who are or have been in care and those eligible for Pupil Premium. After this, priority is given to boys living in the school’s priority area. This area covers much of Bournemouth – the full list of postcodes in the area can be found in the school’s admissions policy. After this, remaining places are allocated to students who live elsewhere. Within all these categories students are ranked based on their 11+ scores.

Offers are given in March, and unsuccessful students who passed the 11+ exam will be placed on a waiting list.

Boys and girls can also apply to enter the school at Sixth Form. The school will have 70 places for external students who wish to start Year 12 in 2022. Applicants must using a form available on the school website by 31 January of the year of entry.

11+ examination

Bournemouth School is part of a consortium of four grammar schools in the Bournemouth area – these schools use the same 11+ examination, so anyone applying to more than one of these schools only needs to sit the examination once.

The examination is provided by GL Assessment, and consists of three papers: mathematics, English and verbal reasoning. The mathematics paper test KS2 mathematics based on the National Curriculum, while the English paper tests comprehension, vocabulary and punctuation. The verbal reasoning test does not depend on prior knowledge and is designed to test academic potential. All papers are multiple choice, and last approximately an hour. There are more questions in each paper than applicants are likely to be able to answer within the time limit.

Sample test papers

The Bournemouth consortium uses the GL Assessment 11+ exam. You can find sample test papers and familiarisation materials for the GL Assessment here.

Think Academy UK has compiled a guide to the GL Assessment, which includes a great range of free resources and sample test papers.
