A Brief Overview of St Olave's Grammar School and its Performance

St Olave's Grammar School, previously known as St Olave’s and St Saviour’s Church of England Grammar School, was originally founded in 1571. It has a strong academic reputation and admission is incredibly competitive - every year over 1400 students apply for approximately 120 places, meaning that fewer than one in ten applicants are offered a place. In terms of student make up, approximately 26% of pupils speak English as a second language, 4% are on free school meals and 4% have some support for special educational needs.

The schools’ results are consistently excellent: in 2019, 89% of GCSE results were awarded levels 7-9 (old style A*/A), and 93% of A-level results were A*-B. Their Progress 8 scores are in the top 14% of schools in England and 99% of students achieve a Grade 5 or above in English and Maths GCSE, which is twice as high as both the local authority and national average.

Preparing for St Olave's Grammar School’s 11 Plus Exam

St Olave's Grammar School’s entrance exam is relatively unusual in that there are two rounds of testing, rather than one. In Stage 1, boys sit one hour-long, multiple-choice test made up of four sections: A (English), B (Maths), C (Verbal Reasoning) and D (Non-Verbal Reasoning). You can find a detailed guide to the Stage 1 tests with lots of example questions here.

Boys who pass the Stage 1 test are then invited back to sit the Stage 2 test, which consists of an English paper and a Maths paper. The English paper has a comprehension section and then a creative writing task. The Maths test is standard format, and like the English paper, is made up of multiple-choice and open-answer questions. You can find a guide to both papers and example questions here.

As the school sets its own exam, the questions are likely to be a mixture of CEM and GL-style questions. The GL website is very helpful, and gives example papers and answers for all four sections. You can also purchase practice packs through the GL website or through CGP Books - the ‘10 minute tests’ collection is particularly useful for helping students to practice skills in short, manageable chunks without burning out.

As the test is so competitive, with on average only one place for every ten pupils, it’s good to start preparing early. However, if your child is already in Year 5, don’t panic - this guide can also help your child to become 11 Plus exam ready in just under six months, and there are also intensive revision courses on offer for those who need a last-minute boost.

St Olave's Grammar School Sample Test Papers and Resources

The English and Maths questions for both stages will be based around the National Curriculum, but as Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning is not taught in primary schools, this may be a good place to start with revision. The GL exam board offers these familiarisation booklets for the Non-Verbal Reasoning paper and Verbal Reasoning paper, and you can also use the practice papers below. It’s worth remembering that the school does vary the question format slightly year on year in order to make it less predictable for students.

The school is also running mock tests and a sale of sample test papers later this year - you can find all their details on their website, but these are likely to be held in May and June. The mock test costs £60.
